HHow to stay focussed on your goalsWe all make goals. We do this with a lot of good intentions; being hopeful that our lives will be better. The biggest challenge in achieving our goals is the ability to remain focused on the path to our dreams. Life distractions keep us from achieving them. We procrastinate and scatter our dreams each day believing that we can do it tomorrow. The fire needed to fuel our dreams almost run out when we lack focus. This piece will give you tips on how to be focused on your goals.

What is focus?

Focus can be defined as the ability to maintain attention and energy to the task you want to achieve. This should be done despite how long it takes to get results. One of the greatest ways of remaining focused on your task is by being positive on what you do. Hellen Keller once stated that “positive thinking will let you do anything; negative thinking will kill your dreams.” This tells us that we have to have big dreams and be positive about them. Positivity is the key to remaining focused. When you are positive in your dreams, you will wake every morning being passionate to continue pursuing it.

How do I develop and maintain focus?

To be focused, you have to have specific dreams that you are pursuing. These dreams should be attractive and valuable. Your desire towards achieving them should be paramount. Things that matter in your life will give you the desire to remain on the course of achieving it. The dreams should keep you motivated and focused towards an achievement.

Make a plan

A famous quote states that lack of proper planning is planning to fail. A good plan will create effective strategies to use to achieve our goals. With a plan, you will have the way to perform the tasks leading to your goals. This will help you to remain focused. You shall maintain the walk to your dreams because you have a guide in your plan.

Create a checklist

To be effective in pursuing your goals, you have to confirm you are doing the right thing every day. You become your self-regulator. This trait will install self-discipline that will keep you focused. Some fail in this when they don’t find progress in what they want. But your progress, however, little should not be a source of discouragement rather it should motivate you to continue pursuing. Self-regulation will bring the focus that will introduce self-efficacy toward achievement of your dreams.

Every day has its activities that may be part of the main goal while others may not be part of it. Our minds direct us what to do and when do to it. If you train your mind always to do something, definitely this will become an enjoyable habit. Our mind is capable of turning off distraction, and this will help us to remain determined to achieve our goals. This will boost the focus towards your goal.

Avoid distractions

Being focused requires you to avoid all distractions that may come your way. Your goals are important therefore do not let anything keep you from them. Make the impossibilities possible. Be committed to ensure you achieve. If you can fight the distractors, you will maintain the pursuit to your goal. This is the best way of ensuring you remain focused.

Being focused may seem difficult to many, but it’s relatively simple. It’s simple to those who are positive, dedicated, and committed to achieving their goals. As you strategize, know that you may not succeed in the first trial. Train your brain to remain in the course. Believe in your dreams. Have a great desire towards achieving them. Be disciplined and fight all distractors. This is the best way to remain focused on your goals.

Very good article for many people, staying focused and motivated to reach their goals is very difficult for many people. People are impatient for instant success, we are all excited at first giving it our all, then in a short time we are pushing ourselves to keep going and often we just quit.

Great suggestions on how to stay focused and reach your goals, I am always working on new goals so going to use these suggestions right away

Yes, we need to give us a time to get the goals, being patience is the key.

I have issues staying focused myself. There is always something else on my mind or some distraction going on. My dog is a big distraction when working at home but I can’t really do anything about her whining and barking all the time.

I find that making a plan and creating lists really are helpful, just like you mention. I just need to focus on eliminating the distractions in this household. 🙁

Thank you Gina for your comment.

I own a dog some years ago and are dog lover too, so I know this circumstances!

But think first about what is in priority and work from it. In the start, don´t put pressure on you to do to much each day. It´s better to start slow and build on it. It´s good feeling when you finish the day plan so start like I say slowly and then you find soon what is realistic. Most people have to much on the day task list and then get the feeling that they can´t managed to do the plan. The key thing is; be realistic.

      Good luck!

One way I have been staying focussed on my goals recently is to take a small action every day and keep tab of that action with a smart phone app. And, I also set a certain period of time that I will do that certain action and reevaluate at the end of that period to see if it is working for me. Each week I add an additional action for other goals I want to achieve too so I am not trying to do too much at once. It is all about establishing habits because it is the habits in our lives that lead us to success or failure.

This is truly a nice article, when I was growing up I just follow my passion and just do what comes to mind, without plan of action.

I spend all I earned, until I realized I need to have a plan, I started creating something I learned about Vision Boards, it helps me for a while, BUT…

Now after reading your article I discovered I lacked focus, I now know the missing link, especially in the area of training our brain.

Thank you for your story. A lot of people have similar stories, but the great thing about it is that this is an experience. And it´s always to use the experience to learn from and build on it.
But it´s important to have a plan to know where you are going and keep you on the track.

I really needed this post, thank you! I always have goals but never seem to be able to stick to them. I have terrible self-discipline!

I like your advice about training the brain. That’s a good way to look at it – it isn’t some bad thing about me; it’s just that my brain needs training. This helps me understand how to stay focused on my goals – thank you for the reminder!

Great post! I tend to have a problem with having goals in the first place. I will see something that someone else is doing and think ‘Oh that seems great!’ then get really excited about whatever it may be and want to do it, then I wake up the next morning and don’t even care about it anymore .. just on a cycle of being interested and then disinterested in things! It’s hard to have goals when there are so many opportunities that we could take, but we can’t take all of them, and we must decide on what it is that we want the most! At the same time I am very grateful for the opportunity to do / be whatever I would like, but gosh, does it make your brain go crazy sometimes!
